History of the company/bank and archive description for EKO Stahl GmbH

History of the
company/bank:
Foundation of town and company was decided upon during the 3rd Party Congress of the former SED (July 20 - 24, 1950).
Factors for this decision on location were:
  • 1. Most possible approximation of production to raw material sources (coke from Poland, ore from the Soviet Union).
  • 2. Favourable connections to the traffic network (roads, rails, waterways).
  • 3. Creation of industrial centres in former agricultural areas and, with it, elimination of the significant difference between urban and rural areas.
100 km southeast of Berlin, the construction of the Eisenhüttenkombinat started on August 18, 1950.
Foundation stone for blast furnace 1 laid by minister Fritz Selbmann on January 1st 1951, construction of another five blast furnaces and the construction of an ore preparation and sintering plant followed until 1954 ; start of cold rolling mill construction on June 1st 1963, cold rolling mill trial operation on June 28th 1968 ; foundation of VEB Bandstahlkombinat with EKO as parent plant on January 1st 1969 ; BOF shop commissioning on November 6th 1984 ; company conversion into EKO Stahl AG (public limited company) with its subsidiaries on May 16th 1990 ; conversion of EKO Stahl AG into a GmbH (private limited company) on June 17th 1994 ; privatisation on January 1st 1995 ; Cockerill Sambre holds 60% of EKO shares ; commissioning of the new blast furnace 5A on April 2nd 1997 ; ceremonial commissioning of hot rolling mill on July 22nd 1997.
