History of the company/bank and archive description for British Broadcasting Corporation

History of the
company/bank:
The British Broadcasting Company was formed on 18 October 1922 by a consortium of radio manufacturers and given a monopoly of broadcasting in the UK. Daily broadcasting began on 15 November. The Company was superseded by the British Broadcasting Corporation under a Royal Charter on 1 January 1927 funded by a radio licence. A national network offering two programmes, the National and the Regional, covered 85 % of the UK. The Empire Service broadcasting in English for overseas listeners was set up in December 1932 and foreign language broadcasts followed in 1938, expanding greatly during World War 2. The world´s first high definition television service started on 2 November 1936, continuing until the outbreak of war in September 1939 when it closed down until June 1946. The BBC´s monopoly ended on 22 September 1955 with the start of Independent Television but the Corporation was allocated a second channel, BBC 2 in April 1964 and colour was introduced in July 1967. Radio broadcasts were re-organised as Radio 1, 2, 3 & 4 and the first local Radio stations established during 1967. BBC Enterprises was set up in 1960 as a wholly owned limited Company in 1979, becoming BBC Worldwide in November 1994.
