History of the
company/bank:
C & J Clark was founded in 1825 when Cyrus Clark set up in business tanning sheepskins. He was joined by his brother James in 1828 and they established their partnership in 1833. The Clarks were Quakers and applied Quaker beliefs to its relationship with employees and customers. The company developed as a footwear manufacturer selling to independent stockists until the mid 1930īs when it started to establish its own retail chain of shops. Through the purchase of smaller retail groups it has developed its clarks, K and Ravel retail outlets in the UK . The company also has owned retail outlets in America and Australia. In the rest of the world the company trades through independent retailers.
The company is a Private Limited Company with 70 % of the shares held by the Clark family.
Archive description The Archive holds papers relating to the company and the Clark family from 1825 to the present day.
The company museum shows a selection of shoes from around the world and from Clarks own production since the foundation of the company. There is also a collection of shoe machinery from the 1880īs to the present.
