History of the company/bank and archive description for Courage Ltd. |
|
| History of the company/bank: |
John Courage, a Scot of Huguenot descent, founded the firm of Courage in 1787 in London, and it remained a family partnership until its incorporation in 1888. The twentieth century saw a huge expansion with the acquisition of many smaller breweries, and by the 1960s Courage was one of the leading brewers in the UK. As a successful brewer Courage became attractive to larger, leisure - based companies, and in the 1970s and 1980s the firm was owned by Imperial Tobacco, Hanson Trust and Elders IXL (later the Fosterīs Brewing Group). Fosterīs sold Courage in 1995 to Scottish & Newcastle plc and Courage is currently part of the largest brewing company in the UK. |
| Archive description | The historical archive collection covers over a hundred breweries, almost all of which have come into the Courage group in the twentieth century. Although the available records naturally differ for each of the companies represented, there are good collections of board minute books, accounting records, property registers, photographs, production records, and a smaller collection of memorabilia. Details of the archive are kept on a database which produces archive lists, and the collection covers the years c. 1600 - 1980. Important collections relating to Courage & Co. , Barclay Perkins & Co. , and Truman Hanbury Buxton & Co. are also kept at the London Metropolitan Archive where they are available to the public. |
