Established in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1832 as Friendsī Provident Institution to meet the life assurance needs of members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). In 1918 the institution took over the Century Insurance Co. Ltd. to form Friendsī Provident & Century Life Office, one of the larger composite (life and general insurance) offices, and went on to build up extensive interests in North America, Africa and Australasia. In 1974 The Century (general insurance side) was sold to Phoenix Assurance, now part of the Royal / Sun Alliance Group. In 1986 the Office merged with United Kingdom Provident Institution to become one of the top ten Mutual Life Offices in the United Kingdom. Between 1989 and 1992 the enlarged Office entered into a number of arrangements with companies in Europe culminating in March 1992 when Friends Provident joined with Avero Centraal Beheer Group, now Achmea (Holland),Topdanmark A / S (Denmark) and WASA (Sweden) to establish the pan European Insurance Group, Eureko B.V. The consortium was extended in 1994 by Ocidental (Portugal) and in 1996 by Gothaer (Germany). In 1993 Friends Provident acquired NM UK Group, the United Kingdom operation of National Mutual of Australasia, and in 1997 merged its subsidiary, FP Asset Management, with Ivory & Sime plc to form Friends Ivory & Sime plc. |
| Archive description | Friends Provident archives comprise of corporate and other records of the Friends Provident companies - Friendsī Provident Institution (1832 - 1918), Friendsī Provident & Century Life Office ( 1919 - 1973) and Friendsī Provident Life Office (1974 - ) - together with similar records of United Kingdom Provident Institution (1840 - 1985) and the United Kingdom records of National Mutual Life Associoation of Australasia (1897 - 1993).
All records, photographs, etc, have been catalogued and are available to researchers and others at Salisbury, Wiltshire, where they are stored. |
| Publications | The last history of the Office to be printed was "Friends for Life" by David Tregoning and Hugh Cockerell published in 1982 to commemorate the 150th anniversary. Copies of the book are available through the Archivist. |
