History of the company/bank and archive description for Deutsche Philips GmbH

History of the
company/bank:
"Deutsche Philips GmbH" was founded in Berlin on November 18th 1926. Entry into the trade register: December 4th 1926. At first, the company had a limited schedule of deliverable products in Germany, such as: loudspeakers, power-supply devices, rectifiers and spare-valves. In 1927 the company took over the company "C.H.F. Müller" (Hamburg, since 1865), a producer of X-Ray devices, and its subsidiary company "Radioröhrenfabrik GmbH (RRF)" and the "Valvo"-brand. CHFM (C.H.F.Müller) was transformed into a joint stock company. In 1930, the "Deutsche Geschäftsstelle der Philips Fabrieken" (German branch of the Philips factories) was set up ; It should be responsible for : questions related to patents, public relations affairs. First subsidiary companies were set up, such as the "Philips Neon AG (OPHINAG)". The Philips factory in Aachen (Jägerstrasse) in 1934 started with the production of radio receivers, such as the model "Aachen Super". Since 1937, the address of the company is : "Hauptverwaltung der Deutschen Philips GmbH, Berlin, Kurfürstenstraße 126".
Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War the "Allgemeine Deutsche Philips Verwaltungs GmbH (Alldephi)" was founded to safeguard the rights of the Dutch parent company. The National Socialist forced Theodor Graf von Westarp, managing director of the company for many years, to leave the management of the company. Now mainly goods supplying the German war effort were produced. Both Philips in Berlin and in Eindhoven in 1943 were under "Feindverwaltung" ("enemy authority"). The Head Office in Berlin was completely destroyed by bombs. With the evacuation of Aachen in 1944 the production at that site ended and was transferred to Pößneck in the county of Thüringen.
In March of 1946 the radio receiver factory was re-transferred from Pößneck to Wetzlar. Graf von Westarp again took over the management of the Philips companies in Germany as "custodian". The Head Office was transferred to Hamburg, first to the site of the radio receiver factory at Lokstedt and in 1949 to new premises in the Mönckebergstraße 7 ("Levante-Haus"), since 1971 to the newly erected "Anton Philips Haus" at Steindamm 94 (Alldephi, eleven subsidiary companies). Three factories were erected in Aachen, among them since 1946 also a factory for incandescant lamps "GLW" and a research laboratory. There at the site "Rote Erde" in 1947 the new construction of a glasswork for the glass factory "Weisswasser" was begun (in Eastern Germany expropriated in 1945, later transformed to a "VEB"), which since 1963 is named "Granus". The production of "Auto-Super" and "Berlin-Super" sets started at the "Apparatefabrik Berlin (AFB)" in 1948 / 1949. Later on (1953), also audio sets and tape sets as well as electric shavers were produced.
Philips in Germany expanded, extended its activities, founded new companies (Philips Industrie Elektronik GmbH (PIE), Elektro Spezial GmbH). In Krefeld the "Apparatefabrik (AFK)" was built, which in 1951 started with the production of the first black & white TV-sets (the so-called "Starenkasten"). The production of parts for TV-sets started in Aachen in 1953 / 1954 ; nearby a factory for the production of picture tubes "Bildröhrenfabrik (BRF)" was errected. In 1955 the Philips central laboratory of the Alldephi "Labor Aachen (PFA)", the "Inspeg" and the "Alterra Grundstücksgesellschaft mbH" were founded. Two years later the laboratory in Hamburg-Stellingen ("PFH") was founded, which in 1991 was merged with the central laboratory in Aachen. Out of the assignment of a number of former independent companies to the Deutsche Philips GmbH in 1974 emerged the Philips GmbH as a ´Betriebsgesellschaft´ with activities in research, development, production and distribution under the roof of the Alldephi, which already since 1954 was named "Allgemeine Deutsche Philips Industrie GmbH".
On January 1st 1982 the "Philips Kommunikations Industrie AG (PKI)" was founded, in which all activities of the branches office communication and telecommunication were concentrated. From 1986 to 1988 the following companies became subsidiary companies of Philips: "BTS Broadcast Television Systems GmbH" (studio and transmitting technology), "Philips Medizin Systeme GmbH" ("PMS", since 1987, before "C.H.F.Müller"), "Philips Licht GmbH" (1988), as well as "Dr. Bernhard Beyschlag" in Heide. In August 1986 the PKI AG separates from the branch energy by selling the "F & G Energietechnik".
In 1989 merger of the Philips GmbH to the Alldephi, change of company name to Philips GmbH.
Sale of the branches "System- und Sondertechnik". Start of the "centurion"-program to increase the productivity of the company. First measures are also implemented in Germany. Sale of the computer-distribution unit as well as of a part of the activities of the PKI plant in Eiserfeld. Merger of "Philips Licht GmbH" and "PMS" with Philips GmbH ; takeover of the "RFT Fernmeldewerk GmbH i.A." in Bautzen and renaming to "Philips Fernmeldewerk GmbH". Acquisition of the "Narva Glühlampenwerk Plauen GmbH" and renaming to "Narva Speziallampen GmbH". Continuation of the "centurion"-program for increased productivity. Reorganization of the co-operation of Philips and Grundig concerning their international activities in the field of video-recorder production.
Since 1993 cost-reductions in the field of purchasing, reduction of the depth of production, separation of a number of branches. To some extent these measures are followed by severe structural, personnel and consequences in the field of company law. The cable and glass fibre branches are sold to the Nokia-Group ; By the sale of the plant in Eiserfeld the company is no longer engaged in the field of computer manufacturing. The "Leuchtenfabrik Köln" is transferred to Winterswijk. The assembly of electric razors is transferred to the parent plant in Drachten (NL) ; Cessation of production in Cologne and Berlin.
Constant measures for increased efficiency are successfully implemented in 1994. Reorganization, the separation of branches and the concentration of activities in almost all sectors.
The BTS is renamed to "Philips Broadcast Television Systems GmbH" in 1996. The structures of the communication systems branches are reformed on the national as well as international level. The worldwide public network activities are sold to AT & T. The remaining PKI-branches are transferred to the Philips GmbH. At the end of 1996 the German Philips companies which are part of the Philips GmbH do employ 17,000 women and men ; here the branches Lighting, Consumer Electronics, Consumer Communications, Car Systems, Household Utensils, Components, Semi-conductors, Medical Systems and Business Communications are concentrated
