History of the company/bank: |
The History of "Spaten-Brauerei" - situated in Neuhausergasse 4, Munich - can be traced back completely to its foundation in 1397.
Up to the 16th century, the ownership of the brewery changed several times. Beginning in 1522, a period of brewer-dynasties starts within Spaten-Brauerei:
- 1522 - 1622, Starnberger family
- 1622 - 1707, Spat family, which gave name to the brewery
- 1707 - 1807, Sießmayr family
- 1807 - today, Sedlmayr family
In 1807, the royal "Hofbräumeister" Gabriel Sedlmayr the older bought the brewery, which at this time stood at the end of the ranking list of the 52 breweries in Munich. In this period the brewery was almost ruined. In quite a short period of time, Gabriel Sedlmayr was able to work his way up into the management.
In 1851, the brewery moved to the Marsstraße where it is still situated.
In the 19th century it was especially the Spaten-Brauerei that further developed the brewery-system in Germany and in Europe, too. The Spaten-Brauerei introduced new brewing methods after Gabriel Sedlmayr the younger had visited England in 1834. In the period followed by his visit to England, Gabriel Sedlmayr passed the informations on which he had gathered. In Northern Europe this led to the invention of a new method for the fermentation of beer.
In 1873, together with Carl Linde, Spaten-Brauerei developed a cooling-machine and in 1894 the Spaten-Brauerei was the first brewery in Munich to produce Lager beer.
In 1922 the Spaten-Brauerei merged with the "Franziskaner-Leist-Brauerei" to form a joint-stock company which was named "Gabriel und Joseph Sedlmayr Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG" and signed with "Löwenbräu" a community of interests-treaty.
The air raids of the Second World War caused great damages to the facilities of the brewery and destroyed quite a number of historical records.
In 1972, the company was transformed from a joint-stock company to a partnership limited by shares. After the absorption of the brewery "Dinkelacker" in Stuttgart in 1993 and "Löwenbräu" in Munich in September 1997 the "Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu KGaA" became one of the biggest breweries in Germany.
