History of the company/bank and archive description for Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e.V. |
|
| History of the company/bank: |
On April 30th 1825 6 bookselling companies of the city of Leipzig and 95 other bookselling companies founded the "Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhändler zu Leipzig" in order to regulate the annual accounts between its members.
By the assumption of more fields of activities the Börsenverein becomes a representation of interests of the whole branch: the fight against the censorship and pirated editions in connection with the development of a national later international copyright, the fight against dirtcheap sell (price maintenance for publications: 1888), the fixation of a business policy in connection with sales regulations. The foundation of the "Deutsche Bücherei" in 1912, situated in Leipzig, and of the "Deutsche Bibliothek" in 1947 were initiated by the Börsenverein. In 1933 the Börsenverein was brought into line and in 1945 he ceases to exist in its previous structure. By order of the "SMAD" (Soviet military government in Eastern Germany) dating from June 21st 1946 the Börsenverein is rebuild in the SBZ (Soviet zone of occupation). In the Federal Republic of Germany on May 14th 1948 the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Verleger- und Buchhändler-Verbände, Frankfurt a. M." is founded (since October 31st 1948 "Börsenverein"). On May 12th 1955 it is transformed into the "Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e. V." with personal (since 1972 company-) membership. On January 1st 1991 the Börsenverein Frankfurt and Leipzig merged to a joint association seated in Frankfurt a. M. Today the Börsenverein represents, uniting - other than comparable company associations - all stages of sale of the branch, as central organization of the producing and selling sector of the branch in the Federal Republic of Germany the interests of approximately 7,000 member companies. |
| Archive description | The archive and library department of the Börsenverein consists of the sectors library, historical archive and central registry/archive of the Börsenverein. The library, by holding approximately 30,000 volumes and almost 100 professional journals and other periodicals, is one of the largest German specialized libraries for its subject. It collects the printed literature dealing with German bookselling and publishing houses. The Historical Archive collects unprinted respectively pinted documents not published in form of a book (autographs, photographs, posters, portraits, brochures, part of the assets of known booksellers and publishers, the archive of the printing house Karl Robert Langewiesche, Königstein). The central registry (ZR) holds the documents produced by the branch office and the offices of the association. At present, approximately 180 shelf metres. Since the beginning of the 90s out of these resources the "Börsenvereinsarchiv" is in the process of organization. Beyond that, the central registry administers a number of resources, for example the circular archive that holds approximately 400 files with materials relating to the reconstruction of German bookselling after 1945. In 1953 the building-up of the Frankfurt stock was begun. The collections of the Leipziger Börsenverein concerning the history of bookselling and publishing today are held in the "Deutsche Buch- und Schriftmuseum" of the "Deutsche Bücherei" in Leipzig. The office archive is held in the "Sächsische Staatsarchiv Leipzig". During the Second World War the resources of the library and the registry suffered great losses. |
