History of the
company/bank:		 The company was founded in 1844 and was then called "Real Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses". During the first 50 years it amalgamated with other railway companies that built and ran railway transport services.
In 1932 it was given a new name : CP - Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses.
CP has always offerd passenger and freight railway transport.Over the past 5 years CP has undergone great structural changes. Some new companies are being set up. They are geared towards certain tasks regarding specific railway activities. The company has always been state owned and operated.
Archive description The CP historical archive is still being organised (by external consultants). There are some documents yet identified and organised. There are many documents from different sources which have not yet been identified or organised. There are some old photographs and historical objects not yet organised. There are documents stored in other archives as DGTT of Ministerio do Equipamento do Planeamento e da Administracao do Territorio.
