History of the
company/bank:
The European Savings Banks Group (ESBG) was founded in Brussels on 23 April 1963.
The object of the Savings Banks Group of the EEC is to promote the aims of the European Community as regards the activities of savings banks. In practice three main aims tasks stand out, namely:
  • to keep its member organisations regularly informed about activities of the EC institutions,
  • to represent the interest of the savings banks before the EC institutions as an institutional interlocutor,
  • and to promote cooperation between its members.
In 1994 the European Savings Banks Group decided to strongly collaborate with the newly founded "World Savings Banks Institute (WSBI)". Both organisations are supported by the ESBG-WSBI Joint Office in Brussels.
Archive description The static archives of the European Savings Banks Group are comprised of about 100 shelf metres of records. They consist of records concerning its foundation, statutes, activity reports, correspondence with members, documents of its bodies, as well as audio-visual material.
The records date mainly from 1963 to 1994. An inventory is available.
The archives also do hold an important legacy of archives of the former International Savings Banks Institute (ISBI), 1924 - 1994, of Geneva, including a - specialised - library. These archives are accessible by an inventory.
