History of the company/bank and archive description for Fundación Eduardo Barreiros

History of the
company/bank:
The Fundación Eduardo Barreiros was created in 1998, mainly to preserve the memory of the economic and social significance of the Barreiros Diesel Group, founded by Eduardo Barreiros, a self-made man who created one of the most important private industrial companies in Spain, from scratch in the 50'S, under particularly difficult political and economic circumstances.

Barreiros Diesel, S.A., was founded in 1954 and reached at the end of the 1960s a workforce of over 25.000 (10.000 in the factory of Villaverde, Madrid, and the rest in subsidiaries and related companies). Barreiros Diesel and its group designed and built 9 different diesel engines from 55 HP to 320 HP. They also built trucks from 2.5 tons to 38 tons; buses; vans; tractors; generators; forklift trucks, outboard engines and, after a partnership with Chrysler in 1963, cars "Simca" and "Dodge Dart". In 1969 Eduardo Barreiros sold the whole plant and organization to Chrysler Corp.

The Fundación Eduardo Barreiros also aims to raise awareness of the history of industrial design, as well as to promote research in the field of automotive and motor management and technology through the provision of funding. To this end, the Fundación Eduardo Barreiros has announced the first Eduardo Barreiros 2000 Awards.

Archive description The collection of records is not yet finished, but at the moment occupies about 100 linear metres of shelves. The records include personal documents, but the most important part is devoted to the history of Barreiros Diesel, S.A., and its Group. There are board and shareholders meeting minutes, letters, technical documents, contracts, internal publications and manuals, plans, and a lot of photos, tapes and videos. Also, a compilation of publications (books, journals and newspapers) quoting the main deeds in the company history. The documents range from early 1940s to last 1980s, being a relevant collection to understand the "Spanish economic miracle" and the origins of the current automotive sector, the most important in the industrial structure and the leader in exports.

The Archive is placed besides the Museum Eduardo Barreiros, that in June 1998 was opened by the Fundación Eduardo Barreiros. Both are located in El Escorial, 40 kilometres North of Madrid. Archive and Museum are a tribute to Eduardo Barreiros and his brothers Valeriano, Graciliano and Celso who, together with a team of excellent engineers, created Barreiros Diesel. Among the museum's exhibits are some of the most symbolic engines and vehicles that bear the Barreiros name. Evertything has been carefully restored and is in full working order.
