History of the
company/bank:
The Central Bank of Iceland was established by law in 1961. From 1927 and up to that time, the central banking functions were administrated by the National Bank of Iceland (Landsbanki Íslands), the country`s largest state owned commercial bank. Prior to 1927 the right to issue banknotes had been held by two establishments, the State Treasury (1886-) and the Bank of Iceland (1904-).

Archive description The Historical Archives cover the short period of the Central Bank of Iceland and in addition to that, the archive of the National Bank of Iceland from its foundation in 1886 up to 1961 when the Central Bank was founded as a separate institution with the rights and obligations of a central bank.

Records are available on cards and on computer for the last eight years (principally from 1992 onward).

Special collections:

  • The archives preserve personalia of a few outstanding bankers
  • Photographs and videos are also kept as special collections

  • 1 The Central Bank of Iceland 1961-1991: a brief presentation. 1991.
  • 2 Skjalahandbók - an archives manual, mainly for internal use. Draft 1996.

Conditions of use The right of admission to the archives is ensured by the Information Law no. 50 of May 24, 1996. Those interested have to apply formally to the Head Office of the Bank where all applications are processed.
