History of the company/bank and archive description for Banca di Roma |
|
| History of the company/bank: |
Banca di Roma is the fruit of a multi-stage operation that began with the preparation of a stategic plan by Cassa di Risparmio di Roma, a regional savings bank founded in 1836. In 1989, Cassa di Risparmio di Roma acquired Banco
di Santo Santo Spirito, a medium - sized bank also strongly rooted in central Italy, with the twofold aim of attaining a scale comparable to that of Italy ´s major banks and consolidating control of its regional market. The most important stage of the plan was the merger between Banco di Santo Spirito, to which the banking activity of Cassa di Risparmio di Roma had been transferred, and Banco di Roma, one of Italy´s largest banks, with a nationwide network and branches or offices in the main financial centres abroad. On 1 August 1992 Banca di Roma S.p.A. was thus born. The new bank is a member of the "Gruppo Bancaroma", and combines in one the spirit of enterprise, strength and domestic and foreign reach of the three pre - existing institutions. With the acquisition of Banca Nazionale dell´ Agricoltura, Banca Manager SpA, Mediocredito di Roma SpA and of Banca Mediterranea SpA, the "Gruppo Bancaroma" is one of Italy´s largest banking groups in terms of branches (1.164) and staff (19.881 employees) and ranks very close to the top in terms of assets, deposits and loans* [*The figures refer to the end of December 1998]. Banca di Roma´s foreign network comprises 17 main branches and 8 representative offices, as well as the 22 branches of its French subsidiary Banque Générale du Commerce and the two main branches of Banca di Roma International and Banca Italo - Albanese. |
