History of the company/bank and archive description for Guinness Limited

History of the
company/bank:
Arthur Guinness acquired a brewery at St. Jamesīs Gate in Dublin, Ireland, in 1759. By the end of the 18th century he was specialising in a popular black beer known as porter or stout. This is today known as Guinness, after our founder, and sold in over 150 countries.
The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1886 by which time it was exporting to all continents and was the largest brewery in the world. In 1936 the Guinness brewery at Park Royal in London was opened.
From the early 1960s Guinness has built breweries overseas (in Nigeria, Malaysia, Cameroon and Ghana), established many contact brewing or marketing operations overseas and acquired majority shareholdings in Grupo Cruzcampo (Spain) 1991 and Desnoes & Geddes (Jamaica) 1993. In 1985 & 1986 Guinness Plc. acquired two distilling companies and set up separate brewing and distilling divisions. The brewing division was formerly called Guinness Brewing Worldwide Ltd. and is now Guinness Limited.
Besides Guinness stout, many other brands are produced by Guinness Limited companies around the world including Kilkenny Irish Beer, Harp, Red Stripe & Cruzcampo lagers, and Kaliber Non-Alcoholic lager.
Guinness was the first brewer to develop a "widget" draught can for which in 1991 the company received the Queenīs Award for Technological Achievement.
In Dec 1997 Guinness Plc merged with Grand Metropolitan Plc to form Diageo Plc which is now the parent company of Guinness Limited.
