History of the company/bank and archive description for Reuters Ltd.

History of the
company/bank:
Moving from Germany, Paul Julius Reuter established his headquarters in London in 1851, transmitting stock market quotations between London and Paris via the new Dover - Calais cable. By 1874, as well as supplying most leading European newspapers with general news, Reuters had agents in the Far East, South Africa and Australia.
PJ Reuter retired as Managing Director in 1878 and was succeeded by his son Herbert. Following Herbert´s death in 1915, a small group including Sir Roderick Jones, former manager in South Africa, bought the entire shareholding and, in 1916, created a private company, Reuters Ltd. By 1941, the Press Association (owned by provincial newspaper publishers in the UK and Ireland) had acquired all shares. Later that year, the Newspaper Proprietors Association Ltd. (now Newspaper Publishers Association Ltd.) acquired a 50 % interest. The Australian Associated Press and the New Zealand Press Association became shareholders in 1947. In 1941 the Reuters Trust was established, guaranteeing the independence and integrity of Reuters news services.
In 1984 Reuters Holdings was established to acquire all the issued voting share capital of Reuters Ltd. A new holding company, Reuters Group PLC, was created in 1998. Now the leading world news organisation and supplier of electronic information services, Reuters serves not only the world´s press and broadcasting organisations, but is also the largest international supplier of economic and business news.
