The pharmaceutical company Glaxo Wellcome was formed in May 1995 from the merger of Glaxo (founded in New Zealand as Joseph Nathan and Co., 1873 , and registered in London, 1899) and Wellcome ( founded in London by Henry Wellcome and Silas Burroughs as Burroughs Wellcome, 1880). Joseph Nathan and Co´s chief product fom 1906 was Glaxo dried milk. In 1913 it became a British public company, and in 1936 a subsidiary, Glaxo Laboratories Ltd. was created. In 1958 Allen & Hanburys (established in 1715) was acquired. In 1961 Glaxo Group Ltd was formed, Glaxo Laboratories Ltd. becoming its United Kingdom subsidiary. In 1971 Glaxo Holdings Ltd was established as the parent company. By now company interests included baby foods and consumer pharmaceuticals as well as ethical (prescription - only) pharmaceuticals. The establishment of Glaxo Inc in the USA in 1981 helped to ensure the success of the anti - ulcerant medicine "Zantac", launched in that year, through access to a larger market than previously.
Burroughs Wellcome established itself in Britain with its "Tabloid" trademark, applied to a wide range of pharmaceutical and non - pharmaceutical products. In 1906 its US subsidiary was founded. In 1924 The Wellcome Foundation Ltd. was established to co-ordinate the various business and research activities of Henry Wellcome. On Wellcome´s death in 1936 the Wellcome Trust, a charitable foundation for the advancement of research established under his will, became sole owner of The Wellcome Foundation Ltd., by which it was funded.During the 1940s the "rational approach" of the American scientists George Hitchimngs and Gertrude Elion to drug discovery (involving the design of molecules with a specific action based on their structure) was a significant advance for the company. In 1985 Wellcome plc was created as the parent company, and in 1992 the Wellcome Trust reduced its shareholding in the firm to just under 40 %. Significant Wellcome products in this period included the anti-herpes virus teatment "Zovirax", launched in 1981, and the anti-HIV compound "Retrovir" (also known as AZT), launched in 1992. |
