History of the company/bank and archive description for BMW Group |
|
| History of the company/bank: |
In 1916 BMW AG was founded in Munich and produced aircraft engines during the World War I. In 1923 the company began to build motorcycles with opposed cylinder engines and shaft drive which are still produced today. By the end of the Golden Twenties BMW expanded and acquired in 1928 an automobile production in Eisenach. In the beginning all BMW cars were produced there. Although the production of aircraft engines was an important part during the 30ies and 40ies it had to be given up in 1945. BMW lost most of its plants through occupation and dismantling. The new beginning was managed in 1948 with motorcycles and in 1952 with automobiles both produced in Munich. Until the end of 1950 BMW had big economic problems and fought to survive. Based on the models of the 'New Class' the expansion of the company along with growing profits began. From 1970 on the series 3, 5 and 7 were created which are the backbone of the production up to today. Taking over of Rover didn't bring the expected success and therefore Rover Group was sold in 2000. Today BMW is present on all important markets as global player and has one of the best reputations worldwide. |
